Oil on wool
Self portrait as Napoleon is a life-size painting of the artist posing nude as Napoleon from the painting Napoleon in His Study (1812) by Jacques-Louis David. The painting was done over a surface that was made by one line of wool woven over a wooden frame to simulate a canvas. After the painting was completed, the line of wool was unwoven and mounted in a room at the same height as the artist. The installation explores the relationship between what the viewer sees and the information contained within the description as well as painting's relationship to the human body.
